I am an enthusiast, and if the defender was still marketed in the US, would be willing to pay 10K over MSRP. The LR3 while a great vehicle hasn't had any reviews since 2005 when it had numerous issues. This is mainly why I'm reluctant to buy it, and spend this large sum of money. I'm not stopping my pursuit to find one, but am now considering the 2009 Wrangler Rubicon.

I'm starting to think you're my brother-in-law in disguise.
That is hilarious.
Funnier still is that the brother-in-law guy now professes to covet a Rubicon. I bet that vehicle handles those country curves really well and is a fine, comfortable and quiet daily cruiser for his 35,000 miles per year of driving. It will certainly punish his 150 feet of difficult driveway into submission on the 30 or so days each year with truly bothersome quantities of snow. Plus, DIY oil changes will be easier than on the LR3 and it will be cheap without feeling cheap!
Now I am starting to think that we all just need to begin a collection to buy him a nice snow thrower.

Yes, Rubi's are nice and very capable, but i swore that I would never own a Jeep again. My 1997 TJ had to be flat bedded to the dealer three times while under warranty. Each time it was a minor malfunction like the clutch depressed sensor failing, but a major inconvenience. Odd quirks, like up shift light would come on and give me a mild heart attack after an hour of highway driving in fifth gear. I expect stuff like this from 'over' engineered cars like Audi's and Landrovers, but not from an over sized tonka toy.

If I remember correctly Motor Trend seems to think the LR3 is as capable if not more so that a stock Defender when they nominated it SUV of the year.

Just got back from a long weekend, and am catching back up. I have to say Ron, Houm, mustbeaudi...thanks for the laughs. So, to summarize Ron, you're going to run your new car into the ground, but it has to be new. But you don't want to pay for it. Oh, and even though you're keeping it forever, depreciation is a huge concern. And you want a big 4x4 because you're huuuuuge and need 4x4 capability. But you also need superb cornering in the twisties. So you're logical conclusion is a Jeep? I'd like to see you shoehorn yourself into that! Honestly, I'm trying real hard...but I can't figure out what your agenda really is....I think Porsche is coming out with a Sequoia Carrerubicon soon, maybe that will work?

I think the Defender has this over the LR3 (stock):
1. Ground clearance
2. Solid Axles (read greater wheel travel and supposed toughness)
3. Removable top !
4. Short Wheel base
5. Great approach/departure/breakover angle
6. Aftermarket buildability (is that a word?)
7. Simplicity
....but I'd say that the LR3 is a better "all-arounder" than the Defender. If I were going to drive cross country and that included some tough trails, I'd rather be in an LR3 for the sake of comfort and handling on all roads.
