Under the advise of a mechanic I recently changed my oil from regular to sysntetic? Is that good for my car? Also, I have noticed an harsh knocking when I start my car is this related to the oil or something else.

Regular or Synthetic shouldn't make a difference with modern oils as far as which you choose it is a preference. A harsh knocking is a sign that you are not getting oil to the top of the engine at startup.

What year discovery and how many miles?

Could be a clogged pickup tube or dirty oil pan. or the oil pump is not working well and needs repaired/replaced.

Also, what weight oil are you using? Did your mechanic change that too?

Thanks for the info, not sure what he used will check with the mechanic and post. My disco is a 2000 and 121K miles. Well maintained. The knoking goes away after the engine warms up .

One other thing, when i start the car beside the knoking I hear something like water boiling, is that related or is that my water pump getting ready to go?

Not sure what he did. He suggested to put syntetic instead of regular oil given the miles on it. I have about 121K miles but like I said earlier , the car has been well maintianed.

Go get responsible for your truck, call the mechanic and find out exactly what oil by brand and weight and also what filter, by brand.
I would tell you to stop driving that truck till you get this resolved cause that cold knock is adding to the internal damage of your engine, the more you drive it.
