Recently we received a coupon for a free oil change from our local Land Rover dealership, and we set up an appointment to get it done. I was shocked to see the coupon because we have never done anything at any Land Rover dealership, and for $120 for an oil change I probably never will. Once they were done they put the normal reminder sticker on our windshield, but it says we are not due for another oil change for 7,000 miles. They did not use synthetic oil and even if they did I've always been told the furthest to go on synthetic oil is 5,000 miles. So could this be right? I was always taught growing up that oil changes were the most important thing to get done, and you did it every 3,000 miles. Have I been wrong all this time?

Book says 7500 miles. I do half that (3750) because I take the LR3 off-road regularly...

A DIY synthetic oil change will cost you about 75 bucks. Easy job and you know it's done correctly. I just dropped in Royal Purple.

I do 10,000 miles and use castrol edge. I have perfect oil analysis to prove 10k is fine .

That's good to know.
My dealer charges $100...seems like a lot, but if the differential is only $25, that's worth me not having to remove the skid plates, buy the oil/filter & dispose of it. That's an hour i can spend with my kids. :)

I bet that $100 quote is NOT synthetic.

I go for about 4.5k-5k on dino. I do think 3k is absurd...especially with the large oil capacity of the LR3. Takes longer to dirty...

I bought my LR3 almost a year ago and had the first oil change done after about 7K at the dealership cause they gave me a deal...they put the sticker back on for 3K. I called them out on it and they said it was because most people default to thinking every 3K cause of marketing.
So basically it's just another money maker.

I changed the oil this weekend on my LR3. I had used Castrol Edge, full synthetic the last time I changed it. The oil was not very dirty at all after 6,000 miles. The next time I am going to change at 7,500. BMW is now advising to change theri full synthetic at 15,000!. Those guys wouldn't say that if it wasn't true. I think the guy that said go 10,000 miles probably is right.

A lot of newer vehicles that do not see harsh driving conditions are designed to go for longer driving between oil changes. Most people drive to and from work and sporting events, that doesn't even begin to test the durability of a newer engine. My wife's Jeep is recommended every 10,000 now. 5,000 if we do any serious off roading and that's warrantied, so you know they wouldn't pay for anything they don't have to.

That is on synthetic oil BTW.
