Hey Everyone,

Does anyone think I would need a wind flare on a Voyager half-rack? I know many folks with a full rack have the wind flare, but it does not seem like something they put on the half-rack. Does anyone have any experience or advice?

Here is a picture of the half-rack from the Voyager Racks website:

Thanks so much!

there doesnt seem to be a top bar where you can attach your standard thule or yakima fairing. do they have a custom fairing offered to go with this? regardless, there will definitely be additional wind noise. how much you can tolerate will be totally up to you.

From what I am gathering, the wind noise is pretty minimal with the half-rack because it's well behind the sunroof. I am sure there will still be some noise, but not nearly as evident as some of the full racks. I believe there are some custom options through Voyager racks for a wind-fairing, but I was told most half-rack owners don't need it. I'll wait and see how it is when it's installed in a few weeks.

I also got a front skid plate / sump guard - can't wait to see that.

I have the urban off road half rack and its just about the same as that rack and it is LOUD. Its not so much the bars but the spaces in the floor that make the noise on that style rack. I heard it would be minimal with my rack and its not, its try loud and annoying! My understanding is that full racks are usually quieter do to the fact they usually have built in wind fairing. good luck let me know how it sounds because if it is quiet, id sell my urban off road and get a new one!

I wouldn't take too much solace from this. I don't have an expedition rack, but when I have my round Yakima load bars on the roof (attached to the short roof rails behind the sunroof), they howl like crazy once you hit about 65-70 mph. It's almost unbearable. Interestingly, when I put two cargo/ski boxes on top, it gets much quieter. It has more to do with the shape of the bars and the whistle effect. But trust me, you can hear it plenty loud even if its behind the sunroof.

Now I am completely wishing I did not order this Voyager half-rack - hopefully the noise won't be too bad. Oh joy.

Well..... Spoke to Andy at Voyager racks and told him to go ahead and custom modify my half-rack to include a wind-fairing piece. :)

Another crazy thought – for the money they ask for that really simple structure, I could buy a good welding machine (can I?)… Hm…

Yes, you could. Stick with Lincoln or Miller welders and you'll do fine. Add to the list of tools an abrasive cut-off saw, a hand grinder and grinding wheels, a tubing bender, a welding helmet and gloves, etc. And don't forget that trip to the powder coater.
