That makes sense. Is it around a typical mileage that this becomes an issue or is it sporadic ?

Seems like most who have had them replaced were between 60k miles and 100k miles? Mine was at around 78k.

For chains or crossover/water pump?

Chains, seem related to interval on oil changes, but my evidence is anecdotal. I just hear most people saying that when their intervals are 5-7500 miles, no reports of timing chain noise.

For the crossover and water pump, the crossover seems to hit at about 75k and at 100k you’re on borrowed time. Water pump seems more varied than that. Crossover is abs plastic and we all know what heat does to that over time. The water pump according to most reports is not catastrophic failure, but a slow leak that will grow in severity. If you have it apart for the crossover, might as well do the water pump also.

Chains and guides.

I haven't seen a report of anyone having the job done on a higher mileage LR4, for some reason. Maybe people with high mileage have changed the oil more often.

I have not noticed that, but interesting observation. I’m at 125k and chain is still tight with original guides. PO changed oil religiously at 5k intervals. I’m doing the same. 2010, LR4 Lux, original guides.

Of course many folks have blown their engines around 100k with crossover pipe failure- at that point who cares about the guides anymore?!?!

Well I was able to do some research on the vehicle. It turns out that the PO had the timing chains replaced as well as the bushings on the lower control arms as well as the lower ball joint’s. That alone is saving me thousands.
The options set up is it for the different than my LR3 HSE. The vehicle does not have the locking rear diff, Although my LR3 did not either. It is a seven pass, but I cannot tell if it has the upgraded HK. In Topix is says
  • BRANDED SOUND SYS (L3).

Also a Jeep guy from CJ5 to new Gladiator here. We've had our 2013 HSE for 4 years now and we just committed to keeping the truck past 100k which we have never done with anything before.
We got through the water pump and LCA bushings and theres no timing chain noise. We upped the oil change frequency since reading this helpful board.
Two things theres nothing you can do about on this truck: gas mileage sucks, brakes dont last long and they aren't cheap.
That said, there is nothing else on the market past or present that beats this truck for a family. Cargo space, driver visibility (though gladiator/jk/jl are similar), comfort, reliability, clean-ability(easy to clean up after kids), and driving spirit. I'm a BMW guy and I LIKE driving the LR4.

Your 2013 should have the updated timing chain guides anyway, so if you had the job done you'd wind up with the same parts you've got now.

How do you like the Gladiator?

I have owned three Land Rovers. An LR3, a Range Rover Sport, and my latest is a 2016 LR4 HSE Lux HD. My first two were V8's and my current LR4 is a SCV6. Power wise I don't see any difference as the 2016 transmission has more gears. I must say the 2016 is very quiet and there are no body raddles. Gas milage has not changed over the years and expect to get no more then 20 MPG. Interiors have not changed and you can toe travel trailers without any problems.
