Hi All!

So I’ve been reading your posts for hours now and feel you all may be the answer to my prayers :)

Quick background- as the name suggests- I’ve been “rover thinking” for well over a year (Double pun, over thinking about a rover).

I’ve been driving a 2016 GMC Yukon SLT that I bought brand new and I loved it but didn’t need such a large vehicle but too many features to give up. My bf drives a 16 LR4 hse silver edition and all my SUV dreams came true- sit up high, don’t look like a soccer mom (no offense, swear, I’m just “single”, 30, no kids), all the sun roofs and best of all I felt like a nascar driver compared to school bus driver. but I couldn’t justify a price tag equivalent to my Yukon with less “flair” - no remote start, no app, no ventilated seats. This will be my daily driver. HILLY. 4 seasons. No off roading. I just want a **** SUV. What’s resulted is paralysis.

Long story short have been stalking the LR4 market for over a year and then a month ago some friends wanted to buy my Yukon. Sold. Borrowing my dads commuter for the last month until the first snow fall in Iowa last week and sure as ****, Tboned & totaled. So I have literally like 3 days to find a new car: ENTER 2014 LR4 HSE LUX -46k miles- priced $29.5 - and interior exterior I love and one of a kind where I live. BUT before I spend 7 hours one way:
  • Water pump was replaced @ 31k
  • Interior appears Incredibly clean
  • Rear brakes are new, filters changed and oil changed 9/6/19,
  • Maintenance records look strong, purchased and serviced at original dealership (currently for sale there)
  • Below is the work order performed by dealer after taking in on trade
  • Tires look pretty decent, passed inspection
  • Interior: light tan leather- huge must for me with no ventilated seats.
So!!! Lay it on me. Thoughts? Any foreseeable concerns? We all want a deal, what price would you feel comfortable at? Anything I should be asking? Would you go this route versus a 15 or 16 HSE with more miles and higher price tag? At the moment I’m thinking - DO IT.

thank you KINDLY for your help!

There’s been a drop in the past few weeks on LR4s in the secondary market in Chicagoland. That’s a pretty fair price for the mileage. Don’t get hung up on the apps as they have been questionable from what I’ve read and heard here. Water pump is pretty typical repair for many. Many hate the eco start stop system. You might find a ripping deal on a lower mileage 2013 but if you found the combo you like and can stomach the lack of the HD package (assuming it doesn’t have it because few 14+ do) then I’d jump on it if I were you.

Agree with @TheWidup. Without going into a lengthy analysis I would consider this a fair price for this vehicle with features and history as described. None of the dealer fixes appear to be exotic issues and the newish water pump should be a source of comfort to some degree. Keep us posted!

One further thought - it's low enough miles so that if they did follow the silly 15k mile oil change guidance it isn't too late to get it back on a proper 7500 or less oil change cycle.

Nothing stands out as a sore thumb. The one thing that kinda sticks out is the Eco Start/Stop, but I personally don't care for it. As long as it Starts up every time, there's zero issues.

You should ask for the VIN number and run the VIN through https://www.vindecoderz.com/. This will give you the EXACT equipment fitted to the vehicle.

The only way I'd be sliding into a '14+ right now (as I have a gem '13) would be if it had Adaptive Cruise and HD. I'm holding out for a '16 with both but odds are it's my '13 until forever.

Just so you know OP, the HD package adds a rear locker and a low range center diff on the '14 and newer vehicles. The low range center diff is pretty much a must if you go off road.

Even if you don't go off road, however, the HD package is something that's probably going to start affecting the resale values of these in about 3 to 4 years, I would guess--around the time Joe Sixpack Overlander is looking at LR4s. So, while you might not care now, it could be a factor in the future. The issue is that it seems like only about 1 in 15 LR4s have the HD package, which means the odds of you finding one with the mileage you want and the options you want are very slim.

i've been looking in the chicagoland area as i'm just 3 hours away but i havent found the color combo i'm interested in at the right mileage/price. i'm indifferent about the eco start stop system - the lr4 eco system is SOO subtle compared to my moms 2017 pilot. no HD package - but honestly im doing no off roading and im not worried about resale - i plan to love this thing forever!

ALSO - the carfax oil changes: first one @ 15K, 2nd @25K, 3rd @ 32K, 4th @46K

LOL - seems like someone got some sense knocked into them after the 2nd one. :)
Also - on the topic of the tan interior I'm with you. I'll never go back to black or dark gray after having the tan. Love how it makes the entire inside feel so open and huge compared to the dark interior.
I'm pretty sure I found the ride you're looking at and it has the external black pack with the tan interior. That's a priceless combo and it looks sweet!
