I have always preferred to own a car outright and agree that paying covid tax on any vehicle new or used right now does not make sense.
I agree they are great vehicles to drive and being originally from UK the Land Rover name does invoke some loyalty. However, every LR4 owner out there will at some point decide the cost outweighs the benefit and will either switch to a newer LR or buy something else.
I guess I am nearing the point where the cost of ownership is getting up there and selling it now before a terminal repair reduces its value to $500 is making more sense.
Still have nothing that I really would prefer to drive vs. $ I want to spend; that is the bigger issue :(
Used 5 series BMW wagon would be high on the list, but pretty rare here in Toronto..........before anyone chimes in, I Know BMW's are $$$ to fix too, but I am thinking can't be worse than a LR

If you are looking to replace the LR4 with a wagon then you may have your answer. The LR4 is great but if you are not using it's off road prowess then the gasoline and upkeep is $$$. In the salt applying areas things can get quite corroded after 10 years. My Rovers have become occasionals but they are older.

My 2012 LR4 with 103k has been a joy. It performed flawlessly as a daily driver and now is aging gracefully into an off-road adventure vehicle. Ride comfort, cargo space and off-road capability…

Unfortunately we are a one car family, so while our annual mileage is not high, our LR4 is our sole vehicle.

Yeah that changes the dynamic. No leisurely week diagnosing the problem while ordering internet parts.

I’m sorry. My post wasn’t very clear. I was just trying to point out that the LR4 ‘can be’ a reliable 100k+ vehicle and daily driver especially as forum posts favor mostly the issues.

Nonetheless, if reliability and economy are your goals for your daily driver, there are many better bets than an aging Land Rover. Good Luck

Past 100k miles, you will need a second vehicle if you want to be able to diagnose and solve problems without a rental/loaner. Rentals have been an expense for me. I dont like the dealers, but the indies dont have loaners, and even if i self diagnose and order the parts, it's not always exactly all of them. So i have been down for weeks over the last several years, even though the repairs themselves are not that complicated, the downtime is pricey when renting a tahoe. My suggestion would be to put an order in for a rivian, Ineos grenadier, (yes i have ordered both) whatever... and hold the land rover until that vehicle becomes available. then you have a piece of mind of the reliable vehicle coming, but can still enjoy the rover. And not have to pay the price of current dealer inventories.

LR4 is not that bad economically if you maintain it yourself. It’s a hobby of mine and I actually enjoy it. Otherwise if you are on budget, sell it now till prices are high and get some cheap lease. Because gas+shop maintenance makes it rather a toy than a transport

They are expensive to own/maintain. Period. However, in my mind you are paying for the capability.

The choices for vehicles that will cruise comfortably at 95mph on the highway, seat seven or haul a metric **** ton of gear, that allow you to comfortably sleep in the back, tow 7,500ish pounds, and then with a couple of button presses offer 90%+ of the off-road capability of a Jeep Wrangler are exceedingly limited.

If the above stated capabilities are what you want/need, I would argue it is never time to get rid of it. If it is a paid for vehicle, even if the engine goes, you would still be paying only a fraction of the cost of a new vehicle to get the LR4 back on the road.

Mine doesn't see daily use anymore, but when I want to use it, I am looking for those capabilities stated above. Thus, I don't ever plan on getting rid of mine.
