1999 RR HSE - Rear Passenger Door won't open

Last year about this time my driver door would not open from the inside but opened fine from the outside. After removing the door panel I found that the cable from the inside latch to the lock mechanism had broken. A little touch from a friend's welder put things back in working order and has been fine since.

Now a similar problem with the rear passenger door only the door will not open from the inside or the outside. This makes it slightly painful to remove the door panel so before I take that on I was wondering if anyone on this board has come across this? Maybe something electrical causing this? The door still locks and un-locks with the key fob but maybe something else non-mechanical causing my dilemna?

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

If you see the lock moving up and down, then my only thought is sadly something came loose inside... This may not be fun to fix.

Can someone tell me how to get the back door open? Locks move up and down. handle from outside squeezes but stays in that postion. Door will not open from the inside. Is the panel easy to remove? 99 discovery

Stuck in superlock mode

I'm still driving with a rear door that won't open from the inside or out. I pulled the door panel off without much effort but only to find that everything seemed intact. I've read a few FAQ's on RR doors getting stuck in this manner for various reasons. I called my local independent shop in Sacramento CA. and they have also seen several come through their doors. I'm told that it is stuck in 'superlock' mode (when you hit the lock button twice upon exiting) and the repair is to break the latch assembly and replace with new. I opted to put the door panel back on and live with it for now since we don't often have rear seat passengers in this vehicle. I think he quoted around 400 bucks to make the repair.

It's a bit of a PITA since you can't open the door

Door panels are never fun to take off. Add the fact that you can't open the door makes things that much more more challenging. Not sure how different the Discovery is from the HSE but I had to remove three screws (two from the arm rest and one from the inside latch) and then starting from the bottom pull outward and hope you don't break any of those clips as you work your way to the top. My mid-range speaker is attached to the door panel so you'll need to disconnect the wire leading to it. Take your time because the only thing worse than having the door not open would be to damage your door panel in the process of repairing it. Hopefully you have better access to your latch mechanism than I did. After an hour of fiddling with it I gave up and put the door panel back on.
