2001 Discovery II - Engine Question

On a rare hot day here in the PNW we ran down to a store about ten minutes away and were in the store for about an hour. Came out and the car wouldn't start. The engine turns over but wouldn't fire up. Let it sit for an hour and then it started up and ran for about 5 minutes and shut off. Waited for about an hour again and it started and managed to get it home only to find out it wouldn't start again. the next morning it started and then the *** and D lights started flashing and the car wouldn't shift out of 3rd gear.

I hooked up a battery charger to the car and it started right up and ran for about 5 minutes and shut itself off.

Failing crank position sensor. How mechanical are you?

I had read several other threads regarding replacing the battery first but should I just go ahead and replace the crank position sensor first?

It is not your battery if when you try to start it, the engine turns over at its normal speed.
It is ver common to have the CPS fail during the hot summers.
S, back to my original question, how mechanical are you?
