4th Gear clunk / will not coast

I have a 2000 Land Rover Discovery with 76,000 miles. When I am in 4th gear mostly on a decline, I take my foot off the gas and the truck is seeming to be held back by the transmission or something and when I put my foot back on the gas I feel a **** and hear a clunk. My trucks shifts very smooth so I don't think it is the transmission and this only happens in 4th gear. I was wondering if anyone had a solution or did anyone else have this problem or is it normal?

i had the same problem with my 99 disco II its got about 91k on it,

in forth gear when i take my foot off the pedal then put it on again it clunks, i found out that if i put my foot on the pedal softly then hit it it wont clunk, but if my put is not on the pedal and then i hit it hard it clunks,

i tried upgrading to 92 fuel and it did get rid of the clunking for me, but i think the option of not depressing the pedal suddenly and heavyily is cheaper

I tried driving like that and it did go away, I was just wondering why does it feel like the truck is being held back by the transmission and is that normal?

Yes it's normal for the engine to hold your Disco back from coasting doena a hill. It's called engine braking.

As to the clunk I'd guess it's slop in the transfer case.

As to what's normal: My guess is electronic snafus, siezed break rotors, excessive driveline slop, rough starting, bad gas mileage,and getting shafted by the dealer are what's normal. As is being able to climb a snow, mud or sand covered vertical serface in low gear when called upon to do so.

Go figure.

Sounds to me like the torque converter locking and unlocking.... I doubt it is anything to worry about...
