This noise started about 3 weeks ago. It is coming from up front some where. when i'm in drive under normal driving conditions I will hear this noise. I thought it could be a valve issue at first (not good with engines by the way), but when I open the hood and hit the gas, no noise!! I take her almost to red line and she is quiet. Sometimes it will knock in park every 3secs or so (rare). I know this is very vauge, but I really do not have alot of money to throw at the local dealer. I paid 800 for my front sunroof to be repaired and it still doesnt work right!! I really dont want to loose my discovery. any hints would be awesome!! Thanks!!

Sounds like a cracked exhaust manifold, but can't be sure. When you first start it up cold, run your hands around the mainfolds and feel for an exhaust leak...

ok....when it was mentioned check the exhaust manifold, I did. I could not feel any exhaust coming from around that area. But keep in mind it was way cold. While my wife was reving the engine when warmed up, I heard the noise. I checked and it sound like it was coming from what I asume is a cat converter. It was on the right side just after the manifold. It's kind of square. On the left side in the same position there is what I think in another converter. This time it is round and stamped with "land rover". Is this the factory converter? It the other one an after market converter? Is cat noise just mean change it out? I will double check this weekend by taking to an exhaust shop to check things out for sure. Thanks for the idea!!!!

I does sound like a bad cat, both of the cats that you describe are factory installed. You can just change out the cat before it clogged itself up (which it will do in time) Land Rovers are known for bad Cats, but LR will not warranty them unless they fail emissions. Rattling will not cause them to fail.
