I have had a tick for a while in my 96 D1 with 125,000 miles, first I thought it was an exhaust leak so I replaced the manifold and mid pipe gaskets with no luck. I then read the codes and got miss fire codes P0300 and P1316, so I changed the wires and plugs.. a day later the lights back on (check engine).. Still have the annoying tick... could this be a valve problem???? Do I need to get a valve job??? Please help as I'm ready to finish building this thing so I can get wheelin................ Tim O.

I have heard of issues with the Coil packs leaking, you may want to check them out.

Also when do you hear this ticking?

Have you checked any of the obvious spots with a mechanics stethiscope or a long screwdriver?

Tick could be valves, Cats, Miss fire, bearings in something... lots of things could make a tic.

My tick is a worn wrist pin (gudgeon pin), which means I will probably live with it because it would cost a fortune to fix.

It constantly ticks.. It sounds like a cracked exhaust manifold but its definitely not an exhaust leak. It sounds similar to a very loud sewing machine at idle, and under power you can hear the ticking off nearby buildings as if the manifold had no gasket which I know it does I just changed everything around the manifold and midpipe as far as gaskets.. From above it sounds like the tick is in the manifold region from below it sounds like the tick is in the upper region of the heads, not the cat,... Will a sticking valve or lifter give you missfire codes?????? If so I'm sure this is the whole problem, unless the coil packs are leaking.......... Tim

Sticking valve can give you miss fire codes... I would still want to check with either a long screw driver or mechanic stethescope to be sure of anything.

You say you replaced the manifold already, was it new or used?

Could also be a lifter sticking.... again I would want to check with one of the above methods.

New and I will check with the screwdriver to see if I hear ticking or clicking etc....... in the head, It may be a lifter tick, is there a way to see with out tearing off the heads????? Its alot of work to pull the heads with all the electrical crap and compressor, alternator , plenum etc..... Tim

You shouldn't have to pull the heads if it is a lifter, just the valve covers.
