Aftermarket Rear Differential Cover: Worth It or Waste?

Hello everyone.

I'm considering upgrading to an aftermarket rear differential cover on my truck and wanted to get some real-world feedback. I've seen claims that these covers improve cooling, increase fluid capacity, and add strength compared to OEM units.

However, I've also read arguments that the benefits are minimal for daily driving and may not justify the cost. For those who have installed one, did you notice any measurable difference in temperature, performance, or durability?

Was installation straightforward, and did it require any additional modifications or fluid changes?

Would you recommend it for a mostly street-driven vehicle or for heavy towing/off-roading use?

It’s not specific to LR4s, but I know Banks did experiments with diff covers on diesel trucks and found that they weren’t accurate to the claims made by manufacturers. I don’t think it would hurt anything, but doubtful that they actually make a noticeable difference. I personally would just change the fluid more frequently if your towing a lot or anything that would constitute heavy use.

I don't think the rear diff has a removable cover like solid axles do, though have to admit I haven't spent a lot of time looking at the rear diff in the LR4.

@ftillier i agree, I think it’s just 2 halves bolted together, not a housing with cover setup.

On a side note> If you don't have a locking diff. You can add one of these.

Shame they don't make a front locker that's compatible with the oem locking center and rear ones

I hadn't thought of one for mine. Its a 4lbs rear end, pretty stout for a mid-sized SUV. Proper diff coolers have a radiator and plumbing. Just changing the fluid as part of maintenance is enough and making sure it has the correct fluid. On my diff I'd like toto disenguage the locking at times so its not locked when slipping but I don't think there is any aftermarket for that.
