Good call TCM75. I strongly considered the 1UP but couldn't recall the name in my earlier reply. It's not as well known as the mass market brands but it has a strong following for sure.

I store my Thule in my garage by standing it on its point (the part that goes into the hitch receiver) and I cushion the end with a piece of my cargo mat that I kept after cutting out the holes for the D-rings.

@TCM75
Thanks for the suggestion, will look into it for sure. I don't mind the wrenching at all. I actually keep a few in the "cooler/center console" for my motorcycle rack, etc.

The 1up stuff looks really well built. Might be overkill for my needs and space concerns but it does look great. I am actually looking at a tray style cargo rack that maybe I can just have the bike holders attached to it. The kids bikes are small for now, so it may work.

Anyways thanks. Also I see that you are in N. Jersey, if you ever go offroading, or whatever and know of some cool trails let me know, I will gladly take a drive for a day of beating up the truck a little.

I am agree with roverhockey. I have been delighted with North Shore Racks for 6+ years. I have four children and 6 bikes to load on trips.

The clever vertical array is extremely easy and fast to load. The bikes are secure since they are held suspended by the bike’s front fork. NOTE: the rack will not work for road bikes.
Rear tire is kept in place with a rope tie down. Rack for 6 bikes is heavy at 71 lbs but SOLID. Comes with an rattle/shake pin for a 2 inch receiver hitch - must be 2 inch. Set up does mean that there is reduced access to the rear hatch, but there are three locking positions for the articulating vertical arm. Keep in mind this gets rather heavy with the bikes on the rack if you are to try to reposition the vertical arm fore and aft. I have a separate hitch receiver for the rack on a utility trailer that I tow for longer road trips. When not on the LR4, the rack is used as a static bike rack in garage - this was made separately. See photos.

I see someone overachieved with the north shore rack garage mount. Nice work!

Kuat holds 4 in the back, Barracudas on top can load up to 4 if you arrange the bikes right. Loading bikes on the middle of the roof might be a bit tricky but can be done.

My vote is for the 1up-USA rack. Posting some pics below. You can get it in 2+1 or 2+2 configurations (or just the 2 bike rack). Absolutely love the construction of this rack and it’s super easy to load / unload bike. I can load 3 bikes in 30 secs. They feel very secure. Also, it folds up nicely and fits inside the car or for storage at home. Another great thing is you can place it on the floor in your garage or balcony and use it as a bike stand.

DM me if you have any questions.

Sent a PM, but figure I'd also post here in case anyone else chimes in;

...I've been thinking of buying this very rack.

It is usually just me mountain biking (and I throw mine in the back of the LR4) but we do have a family of 4. It is not typical that we all ride so I figured a 3 bike setup like yours would suit me well as I can always throw a kid's bike in the back.

Questions,

(1) how easy is it to take off the 3rd bike mount to just keep it as a two-up?

(2) Also, do you have clearance issues due to the LR4s low hitch. For instance, when you pull into or out of driveways does the bike rack grind on pavement?

(3) Can you fold it down so you can lower the tailgate? (with bikes ON and OFF?)

Thanks!
