Alright my LR friends... thank you so much for your help. I ditched the Disco and got a new subaru forester awd...

it was a SAD, SAD day to let my blue baby go!!!! one day, if teachers start getting paid more, I will definitely get my disco back, whether its a 1, 2, or the new LR3.... thanks for all your help with my issues. Im officialy no longer a land rover owner, but my heart aches from the breakup... on the bright side, i get 28 mpg and i still have the 4 door suv, just a bit smaller...

before you criticize me, i dont know JACK about cars. the disco 1 broke down the other day (i postred previously about the alternator issue, which I just repaired). While car was broke down, idiot auto insurance roadside assistance guy, told me i should yank on the shifter to "break the safety lock" (he said "ive done it a hundred times, your car will still run...", etc.) So i tugged and tugged and nothing broke, which I am happy about.

HOWEVER... now that the alternator is fixed and the battery has been replaced, when I turn the car off, the key will not release from the ignition. What I think happened is that by yanking on the shifter, i screwed it up. When I put the car in reverse, the indicator actually shows "N", when I put the car in drive, the indicator actually shows "3".

So what I think is happening is that when I put the car in "park", it is not actually fully going in to park. What the **** is going on here? is this another job that is going to cost hundreds!

OFF TOPIC: LR DIsco 1 for sale???????
by the way, I LOVE THIS CAR, but can't afford it right now, anyone want to purchase this vehicle? I kkb's it and the trade-in value is $1,800. I paid $4,500 for it in October of 2007, KBB.com has it in good condition for $3,800 but I feel it is more like "fair" condition, and it states that price at $3,170. I got it with 115,000 miles, it now has 134,000 miles. Meanwhile, I installed a brand new bosch O2 sensor, starter, alternator, battery, brakes and rotors in front and back. I know the transmission is in not-so-great shape, and the honeycomb-ish thing in the exhuast is loose and rattles a bit.

Sounds like you took the advise of an idiot that has no clue about vehicles...

You may need to replace the entire shifter linkage at this point and you can buy used but will be a pain to fix.

Shouldn't the "idiot auto insurance roadside assistance guy" have to cover the costs of the repair? If he was contracted by your insurance company, he represents them. I'd get in touch with them and explain the situation. Maybe they will own up for hiring such an ass and pay for the damages.

Sadly they will probably tell you that you did it, not the idiot that suggested it.

(please understand, I am not calling you an idiot, you didn't know better. The guy who claims to know something should never give advise like that unless he really knows every vehicle and what will happen, obviously this guy was clueless about rovers.)
