I fixed the coolant leak with an intake gasket, took the '01discovery out for a test drive, got about 10mi down the road, and heard the engine ticking. I looked down, oil pressure light on.

It had some oil, but I added more, started it up, it was fine, ticking went away. Drove it 100yds, ticking again, pulled over, shut it off, started it again, it was fine, accellerated the engine, low oil pressure.

Are these 4.0 engines prone to oil pump falure? It has 107,000mi.

Thanks, Phillip

Fixed!!!!

Fixed!!!!! I hope.

I put a can of sea foam in the oil, started it, let it sit for an hour, came back, started it until it lost pressure again, drained the oil, sprayed 2 cans of brake cleaner up through the drain plug hole hoping to spray off the pickup screen, put it 5 quarts of oil and one can of 5min motor flush in, idled it for 5 min (oil pressure stayed up at this point, probably due to the brake cleaner and the getting rid of the old oil), drained it, added 6 quarts of Mobil 1 10w40 High Mileage, changed the filter, and off I went.

I have oil pressure again, and no ticking valves, even though I had to drive 5 miles or so with low oil pressure earlier today.

Lets hope land rover engines are as tough as they say. I wish they had included an oil pressure gauge instead of a light.

Keep in mind that Land Rover engine as you put it is a 1960's era Buick 215ci engine with some major rework done to it, but it is still a very old technology engine, with a lot of new technology to make it run without a distributor.

Congratulations on a running, non-leaking (for now:) Land Rover! So....what do you think?

Is that good or bad?

I think a lot of the older engines were tougher, but this one was sort of ahead of it's time, so is it tougher? We'll see.

So far I like the land rover a lot. It needs a new tensioner pulley but once I do that, I think it will be a very quiet engine. It drives well and seems to have decent power. Obviously the people reviewing this vehicle when it came out had been driving cars, because this is not the body rolling, underpowered, non-stopping vehicle that they talked about, and I don't even have ACE.

We are horse people, and as a horse person, I had never owned anthing smaller than a 1/2 ton truck, until now. I still have my 1 ton for pulling the horse trailers, but I think this will be a nice little zip-around vehicle.
