Is it possible to get a D2 head unit for a D1? Would it fit and hook up the same way?

I've never tried it, but the factory head unit for most D2s is larger than that for the D1. The wiring will not be a straight fit. Most of the D2s have outboard amplifiers that would not be compatible with your D1. I'm sure you could wire it up and make it work, but looking to the aftermarket would be an easier and cheaper way to go.

So it is a completely new head unit. I thought it might just be an upgraded unit.

Steve has a good point. If you are going to change out the factory head unit, you may as well invest in a better quality one as opposed to a factory update (If you can afford it, it's a good idea to change out all the speakers and get a decent amp). If you do go for the aftermarket head unit, you will probably find it difficult to get the present controls to work, in which case, just use the remote that will come with the unit, or change your volume etc, settings manually. The buttons that are made obsolete can be used to switch auxillary equipment if you chose to fit any.
