This may sound dumb but I'm not sure if my 99 Discovery is a DI or a DII. How can I tell? Help? I'm not sure what parts to order for my truck cause they're different. Thanks!

Where are the tail lights? Up high and big or lower and small?

Up high = D2
Lower = D1

You can also tell by the door handles...

Flat = D1
Raised = D2

A LOT of people feel that the 99 D1 was the best build year for the D1. BMW was in charge, and most of the electrical and other gremlins had been worked out. You also (IIRC) have BMW electrics and not Lucas. You also get the "benefit" of GEMS rather than a distributor (96 models on), and the 4.0 V8 (again, 96 on). And you have a center diff lock, which some D2's don't have.

Enjoy!

So was 1999 the year they introduced the DII, but still made the DI? Does the 03 and 04 have mostly BMW electronics?

The 4.6 in the older Range and last Disco, still the same blocks as the older 3.5, 3.9, 4.0, 4.2?

Also, what are Gems, and what's the benefit?

Thanks!

99 had some D1s (basically left overs from being built in late 98 early 99 I would imagine), and then BMW got their foot in the door later in the year and some 99 D1s were built with BMW oversight...then from 2000-2003 it basically is BMW or BMW designed, and they did rework a lot of the engine and wiring, but really, not a whole lot changed asthetically inside or out--just like six inches longer, which I would **** for sometimes in my D1...--now technically Ford started in Land Rover in late 2000, but I dont think they really did much to the line until about 04/05 with the redesigned LR3 and Range Rover (sport) models...I dont know, I would like a D2 for the 6.5 inches longer and 4 inches wider aspect, but I dont want the BMW internals, so I mean, in terms of Discovery series 1 early 99 is a good bet, series 2 just have the size and upgraded luxury factor--but lost the CDL for the most part. And now, I would take an LR3 just cause its so cool, yet I am not happy with the styling, nor the full electronic function of such things as the parking break and traction control (I see the selling points of the traction control, but it seems lame to select your terrain on a vehicle made for off road, YOU drive the truck it doesnt drive you....hmm, maybe I just dont get it)

So what are the Gems?
And 2004 had the CDL, so if you wanted a larger Disco, wouldn't that theoretically make the 2004 the best year for the Disco?

I agree, regarding the '04 being larger and having CDL.

GEMS is the engine management system. There isn't a distributor -- a computer controls spark timing, etc., instead of mechanical devices. There's a coil pack between the engine and the firewall that sends sparks out through the plug wires to the spark plugs.

It's nice, because you don't have to worry about replacing a distributor or cap. However, it's a computer and computers malfunction leaving you stuck on the side of the road with no possibility of gerry-rigging a fix.

I have a 95 with 4.6, cam, chip and 5-speed, yes a so called PITA distributor some one said that may need a rotor and cap change every 6 or 7 years, BFD, it can be adjusted with advance for power and mileage vs failing coils packs at high dollars the newer dizzy less Gems motors have. The newer Gem's motor Vehicles may have more cup holders which is more important than engine reliability when your in the bush, take a phone and extra water, you'll be found sometime.
Newer is new not better.
