I have a 99 series one with 67,000 miles. Just tore open the center console this weekend and freed up the linkage so the diff lock now works (DUHAM was that thing froze solid. HAD to fully remove it and BEAT it with a hammer just to get it to move, then a two jaw puller to get that bushing off the back end. Who uses aluminum and steel with tight tolerances?) Anyhow, now it will engage easily, but once I put the shifter back to the right, I have to drive a little ways (1/4 - 1/2 mile?) before the diff lock disengages and light extinguishes. I know diff lock is functioning (tight circles produces plenty of chirping in the tires), and that is indeed staying engaged until the light goes out. Is this normal? Or might I have bent some of the linkages with all the prying and wrenching on the system?

Thanks for the help.

Try backing up after you disengage. The Transfer case needs to unload.
