I have a 95 D1. Occasionally the coolant will disappear. I cannot find any obvious leaks and I do not believe the head gasket is blown since I do not get any coolant smell in the exhaust or white smoke. I recently noticed that if I over fill the coolant reservior it leaks out from under the plastic reservoir somewhere. Is this normal or do I have a cracked coolant tank?

Plastic reservoir leaks on a lot of D1's -- it might be a recall. Seems like the black ones are the bad ones, and they replace them with something else.

But is there an internal overflow that would allow the coolant to leak from underneath the reservoir if overfilled?

The only overflow is the cap itself that I am aware of..., if you have the old black tank, they are know for exploding more than anything. If you are just losing coolant though, I wouls say either the cap has gone bad, or you do have a leak.... normally the leaks are on the back side of the intake manifold... if you look you will see where the engine is real clean. When you overfill it, it cause more than normal pressure and this will cause things to leak.
