Hello all, new to this landrover community.

My alternator just died on my '95 Disco I.

My mechanic wants $600+ for a new (OEM) one installed. I prolly would let him do it if I had the cash.

I figure that this may be something I can do myself. But, I thought I would ask the experts a few questions first.

Are any of the after-market alternators reliable? Mean Green?...I've been reading negative comments about those here?

What type does British Pacific sell? Theirs are about $300 + shipping.

Are rebuilt alternators reliable?

How long would it take to replace my alternator? Any special tools needed? (I don't have a service manual.)

Thanks,

Amar

No special tools needed, replacement time for even the basic mechanic about 30 minutes max (I have changed Alt's in less then 10 minutes)

Basically if you don't have a *** of cash, get a lifetime rebuild from a place like advance auto or autozone.... if nothing else you will get real quick in changing them (I hear they go bad often)

Mean Grean is more of a customer service issue than just bad Alt issues.

I would also check with www.discountbritishparts.com Nathan has always done me good, or even www.dap-inc.com they have treated me good as well.

I just replaced the alt on my 96 with one I bought from advance auto. $160 as I recall. Installation was super easy - the big thing to know is how to release the tension on the drive belt. Get a breaker bar on the bolt in the center of the pulley down in the middle - the one that looks like it does nothing, and turn it. That is the hardest part of the whole job.

thanks for the info fellas!

Heem - do you know which model you purchased at advanced auto.

also, if there is a core charge of $95 and the part costs $200... does that mean i pony up $295 and get the $95 back afterwards? or does the part cost me $105 after i return my core?

Start a new post if you like, but SRS is something only the dealer can fix, or someone with the special LR computer/software.
