I recently bought a '95 Disco with 164K miles and in addition to the other problem I've already posted about I'm curious about the amount of slop in the driveline.

A mechanic friend says some is to be expected with this kind of milage but I've got a feeling what I've got is to much.

When I get on or off the gas you can definitely feel the play in the drive line and when I put the tranny in reverse there is a definite clunk.

Any thoughts and any suggestions on how to adjust out some of this play.

I know that when I'm under the car I can rotate the drive shaft a little while in park. I don't know if the diff, tranny or the transfer case is stopping the rotation.

Any and all suggestions apprciated.

Thanks

Its been posted that the clunking sound while shifting into reverse is normal. I have it as well with 93k miles. My driveshafts can be slightly rotated but seems like normal. My other four wheel drives did the same.

Eric,
That is normal and can be coming from the t/case or the tranny. Not much you can do for it other then upgrade your fluids and see if it gets any worse with time.

Eric,

Mike's right, some play in the driveline is normal. Especially with those miles. Remember, the car has 3 differentials. The clunk when engaging reverese is normal. But it can be exagerated if any of the engine or trans mounts are loose.
