My 4yr warranty is about to run out on my 2001 LR Discovery SE and I'm debating on whether to purchase the extended warranty...the dealership is offering 2yr limited warranty extension for $3000 - is this the standard offer? I read about some up to 7yrs 100k on this site...is this something I should ask about? I have about 40,000mi, what problems should I start to expect (I really haven't had any major issues so far)? Thanks for the help!

Extended warrenties are like insurance, if your still under factory warrenty... shop around you could save a bundle. Just make sure to look at what they cover and don't cover.

If you off road alot, extended warrenty may not cover much.

There are at least 3 or 4 online warrenty places that will cover a Disco, so I am sure you will be able to find something, also make sure who has to call to authorize the work and who is responsible if no one calls. Check to see if you can take it to you dealer for service as well..

Personally I didn't have any real warrenty when I bought my 1997 Disco and haven't spent much in the way of repairs over the last 3 years.... Upgrades are another story.

its alot like a home warranty... very well worth it if you need it, and you are almost certain to need it if you don't have it. I would be hard pressed to pay 3K for that, unless you think you would spend more than that in repairs... easy to do on one of these, but if yours is like mine (also 2001) it stays happy with proactive maintenance (and NOT taking it to the dealer). Let us know what you decide to do!

Thanks for the advice. I always keep up with the maintenance but always take it to the dealer. I had to change the brake pads several months ago and refused to pay the amount the dealer was charging but had a really hard time finding someone that would work on a discovery. Do you normally use a chain repair shop or a local service shop?

honestly, for that kind of maintenance, i do it myself - you can change out the brakes on the Disco in 30 minutes or less. But, i would find a good local mechanic that you trust, and perhaps offer to provide him/her a workshop manual if they will be "your mechanic"

There are two types of extended warranties sold at my dealer. I found that the ones offered to me by the service department were 3rd party warranty companies which can and do go bankrupt (Lookup "Warranty Gold" online to see one of the big ones that recently left a lot of people without warranty - including my Audi).

Then I talked to my sales person and he offered me an extended warranty for an additional 4 years up to 100K for $2700 that was backed by Land Rover. This one cost the same as the others and was essentially an extension of my original factory warranty.

The cost does seem like a lot, but in my experience warranties have always paid for themselves if you keep the vehicle, and are not modifying it. My 2002 DII SE is in getting a new engine right now at 63,000 miles. Warranty has covered it. The warranty also covered when one of the motors on my drivers seat went out. That repair bill would have been near $1000.

Shop around, I wouldn't pay over $2700.

warranty

I just looked at my contract from Landrover NO Scottsdale AZ and we bought a used 2003 in May 2004 and bought the 7yr 100,000 warranty from Land Rover and the cost was 1490 usd. Seems like something is either wrong with the price I paid or they are charging you guys too much. I did not negotiate on this either it was the price offered. The inservice date was 8/03 and bought 5/04 with 6577 miles on it..

Tonya,
I love Rovers and wouldn't say a really bad thing against them BUT, I wrote service on them for along time and know what the break down costs can run, they are very high as are many vehicles and you really want the coverage.
I boght a 7 year 100,000 miles with no ded. from GE Capital a few years ago, paid around $3000 for it. I over maintain my truck, nitpick it to death and work it harder then most on this web site off the road. The first time I took it into a dealer, I had nearly 7 pages of repairs made, all minor, many of which most wouldn't have worried about, for $3600, I paid $220 for the non covered items. Need I say more?
Do your homework and find a good policy that your dealer will work with.
By the way, dealers will work with the cost, if yours won't, call another dealer get their price, shop one against the other. Dealers will also sell after market policys.
I worked for auto dealer for 20 plus years, trust me on this one.

If you plan on keeping the Disco II then I would strongly suggest the extended warranty for yourself and selling later. You can get the Land Rover warranty and if you buy it from your local dealer they may include a loaner car, etc... You can also call around to different dealerships and see if they will negotiate. Main advantage is that Land Rover will not go out of business. I have found that it is usually very expensive to get the Land Rover warranty and have chose aftermarket warranties. Bottom line, you want a warranty that will cover everything except a list of certain items. This is usually referred to as exclusionary or bumper to bumper. Call Hal Moses at autowarranties.com. Hal has sold me 4-5 warranties over the past several years for various cars. I have been happy with each one. If you purchase an aftermarket warranty just make sure the policy is reinsurred. Ask the person who is selling it to you for the information on the company, etc.
