Gas door and alarm

I discovered today, if the door to the gas cap is open the car will not lock. However, if the car is locked, the gas cap door opens freely. Is the door supposed to lock when the car is locked. I had the key in my pocket at the time so not sure if the proximity sensor detected the key and unlocked the door for me.

Does not sound right. My D4 will lock without closing the fuel filler door, but when my D4 is locked, I cannot open the fuel filler door if that was closed beforehand.
