HELP Stranded in Bozeman, Montana 10/30

My brother just GAVE us his 2006 LR3 HSE. My husband flew from CO to Seattle to pick it up and drive it back. It has 36,000 miles and just had new brakes and the 45,000 mile service done. DH drove from Seattle to Bozeman last night - no problem. This am when he got a mile out, a loud grinding noise started under the engine - when he accelerates. If he is in drive and pushing on brakes and gas - no noise. But when he accelerates, there is a grinding noise. 1) Does anyone have any idea what this could be. . . 2) Where should he go in Bozeman to find someone who could look at this? It is Sunday - and we know he'll have to stay another night there. Thanks y'all!

Without more information, I'd guess wheel bearing or front CV. I can't seem to find any LR specific listings in Bozeman. Sorry. You may want to reach out to one of the local 4x4 clubs and see if there is a reputable local general repair shop -

It does not grind when sitting still - does grind in motion - accelerating or coasting. He said at 30mph it kind of goes away but any slower or faster it grinds. The grinding is loud. He's trying to send me a video - but it's not working right now. We understand it could be the transfer case - plug gone or low fluid. We just don't have a clue and he's in a strange town - don't know who to trust. He's going to pull up in this big shiny gorgeous car and a tech will think cha-ching!

He hasn't mentioned any loss of power - no lights or codes are coming up (would the codes be on the display screen?

My brother has had no problems with this car for 5 yrs.

we could only guess, since we don,t know, what part of the car the noise is coming from. you said , that lr3 had brake job done recently, maybe they did not adjusted a EPb correctly?
I had that problem , while driving from NJ to New orleans during a snow storm , two years a go. I too had brakes and rotors done by a guy, who was recommended, by a friend of mine, supposedly knowing land rovers, well... older models, without a electronic parking brake....They actually laughed at me , when i told them about adjusting a EPB, stating , that this is just a land rover talk to charge a more money..:.Well..i did not know much back then , so i did not responded properly at the time Long story short,a few days later got stranded near Allentown PA, when EPB jammed solid on the highway. i too did not felt any lost of power and no fault codes, but heard loud grinding noise and pooled off the highway, got out the car and there it was , strong smell of burning brakes and hot rear drums.
maybe it is not related, but worth checking...good luck..

Does he have a rock stuck in a caliper? he can answer the low tcase/diff oil questions by looking under the vehicle. If the plug came out or a seal went bad, it will be obvious. should be failry oil free otherwise.

Does the car shudder when in motion? Are there any burning smells? I would guess you have a brake issue considering that they were just done (possibly improperly). If you smell locked up brakes, its probably a bad caliper or the brake control module. Hard to say from your description

I had the same thing happen to me that Thorgal had happen. It's happened mainly in 05 and 06 models as far as I can tell. They had to replace a control module for the brakes on my car to fix it. I have the part in my garage (I think) if you want the part number.

Not saying that's it. The problem would come and go with me. The brakes would simply lock-up. If the car sits for a few hours, the issue might go away, but it always comes back. The burning smell of brake pads was a tell-tale sign (not to mention a bit of smoke on the back wheels).

Thanks everyone for coming to our aid in our time of need. It ended up being the front differential. I wish we had found a way to have it towed here and fixed here rather than relying on a mechanic far away. We had to leave the car there while it was fixed and DH had to fly back a week later and pick it up. It was a pretty vulnerable spot to be in. I really appreciate everyone's input.
