I got the ipod working in my D1. The head unit is Pioneer with a cd changer. The trick is to hook up to the audio signal path that runs from the changer to the head unit. The diagram shows the DIN cable on the left the pins #2(cd L ch) and #4(cd R ch) are the way in. Remove the head unit using an allen wrench on either side of the face under the little flaps that hide the screws. Pull it out carefully grabbing it by the cassete opening. Unplug all the cables from behind the unit to get some slack. The round plug is the one from the changer. Get a good shielded 1/8" stereo cable from Radio Shack 6' long(Catalog #: 42-2607), slice off one end and solder the red wire to the #4 right channel pin wire, and the white to the #2 left channel pin wire. Ground the remaining wire to the chasis of the radio. It's a bit of a pain. Don't forget to have your radio code handy too. Now snake the other end of the new cable down and out of the bottom of the dash. Test it out before you put it back together. Eject the CD cartridge from the changer, turn on the radio and select CD. It will say "NO DISC" but that's OK. The audio signal still flows into the head unit. Plug your ipod it and crank the ipod volume. Don't charge your ipod while playing it, you may get some wierd noise. But other than that you should be good to go!
