I'm not certain, but pretty sure that the Chevy app you mention is tied into the OnStar system. OnStar maintains some kind of cell connection independent of your smart phone - previously, if you were locked out of your Chevy, you had to call OnStar and they could unlock the vehicle remotely for you. This app looks like it just cuts out the middleman, and adds in some other toys, like a remote start.
I haven't seen the Nissan commercial, but I would bet that it also relies on an in-car cell connection also.
As the LR doesn't have any kind of wireless connection other than short range Bluetooth, I think we are SOL on this idea - though it would be absolutely awesome.
It would be great to see an iPhone app that communicated via BT or the i-device cable with the LR's computer so you could track mileage and other vehicle performance data on a smartphone app without having to manually enter it.
