I just bought a 1996 Disco1 with 140,000 miles and do not know anything. Could you help me?

I was driving it home on the Hwy. about 60MPH then it started to slow and then go then slow and go. All the while the oil light would flicker. I stopped the car right away and let it set so that I could check the oil level. It was full.

After reading some of the postings it almost sounds like a carbon build up on the valves. But the oil light thing has me worried. Do you think that the oil pick up is stopped up with sluge.

I was told by Joey that it could be a VSS. Where is a good place to buy one? I do not have a lot of money.

thanks for any help that you can give me.

Welcome to the insanity!! 60 mph engine antics does sound like a VSS. Did the engine also run really roughly -- like it was going to shake loose from the mounts?

I bought my VSS from John Miller at www.tidewaterrovers.com. It was a used part but I figured (1) I needed it quickly and (2) I didn't need to spend $150 on a new part for my 96.

thanks for the welcome. Yes the truck did run very rough after this happened. I have planned on replacing the VSS as well the SeaFoam in the fuel, Crank case, and the intake manifold. Can you think of anything else, short of a valve job?
Thanks for all the help.

That should help with your issues... of course not knowing any previous maintenance that has been done....

Well just installed the rear drive shaft and rubber spacer. Then added the SeaFoam to the fuel and intake. Found one spark plug wire off, repaired that. It is still running a little rough. I once had a 1969 Buick LaMans that sounded like this. I ordered the VSS today and hope that it will smooth it out. Do you guys have any suggestions. Once I reconnected the spark plug wire the check engine light went off. Any other ideas?
How do I get the SRS light to stop blinking?
thanks.

Per the PM that I just replied too.

SRS is dealer only fix.. sorry.

If you had one spark plug wire off, I would start by replacing all plugs with standard Champion plugs, and replace the wires. This almost always helps, and isn't that expensive. I would also clean the MAF sensor, with some non-residue contact cleaner.

Remove the MAF sensor from the vehicle... get a can of non-residue contact cleaner and spray very thouroughly inside the MAF manly across the vanes that measure air flow. Let dry for 15 to 20 minutes (to ensure no left over puddles of cleaner) reinstall.

I spoke to my local LR dealer(LR of Frisco TX), and he told me that replacing the battery will not, trigger the SRS light. That there is a problem with the seatbelts and or the airbags. He also told me that they get $105.00 per hour. Not a very friendly guy, considering he wants all my money.. and I do mean all of it.
I think that i will live with the light....I dont plan on hitting anything....Beside I have never felt right with an explosive device, even a small one, near my head. Seatbelts should do the job...I mean thats what they are for right?

I am glad you mention seat belts, I have heard (can not confim) that there is a plug on the driverside under the seat that can get a loose connection that will cause the SRS light issue....

Check it out, should be the one going to the drivers seat belt.
