I get tired of people saying to "buy a sports car" when the very legitimate criticism of the acceleration of an LR3 is made. Face it, our LR3's are the slowest in their class. They are too heavy, the lbs/hp ratio sucks. Wanting brisk acceleration in your premium luxury SUV is not unreasonable to me. I am not talking gut churning torque like my Ford GT, I am just talking not being the bottom in your class. Trust me, I have a sports car and I do not expect that from my LR3. What I do expect is to step on the gas and be able to merge easily into oncoming traffic.

Regards

I used to have a sometimes sluggish accelerator which seems to have disappeared with the new fuel tank and software updates. Mine's fast off the line (If someone's obviously trying to get in front, LOVE to punch it at a stoplight and consider it free advertising for Land Rover) though I did get thoroughly embarassed by a Mercedes which turned out to be an AMG. Have you tried leaving it in sport mode, that might help, too. At freeway speeds I find the passing and merging abilities to be great. btw the LR3 performed flawlessly on the steep hills around here on ice, compact snow, and freezing rain.

Glad to hear you are enjoying your Rover like that :) Do not get me wrong, it is an enjoyable vehicle and I knew exactly what I was getting when I leased it. However, go head to head against any number of other luxury SUVs and you will have your butt handed to you. Now again, I am not talking about wishing the LR3 had sports car acceleration, if I want a 0-60 run in four seconds, I have the car for that. What I am talking about is not seeing the tail lights of everything from a Durango, Armada, and Escalade at an intersection. The thing just weighs too much for its engine IMO. Many others are happy with the acceleration, notably those that drove earlier (and slower!) Discos. I would just like to see a better weight to horsepower ratio.

Cheers

I agree that more hp would be nice and I am one of those coming from an earlier Disco but I swear I am consistently leaving Durangos, Armadas, MDXs, etc in my rear view. I'm smarter than to try that against an Escalade though and like I said that AMG Mercedes had me wearing a paperbag over my head. Maybe the other drivers are just lulled to sleep by the sight of an LR3 in these parts. I do tend to drive mine hard and maybe the adaptive transmission picked up on that during the "learning process". I believe the LR3 is due for a "refresh" in 2008/2009 and maybe they'll address the issue then. Perhaps the nicest thing for me here in rainy, hilly Seattle is the ability to punch it from a stop on a hill and not have the wheels spin.

I just traded a Titan and replaced it with the LR3. The Titan is, of course, the pick up version of the Armada. Unless you have some NOS installed in your LR3, there is no way you are dropping an Armada. Trust me on this, that Nissan engine is a puller and the gearing is enough to yank a mountain out of place. Off road, the LR3 will have both the Titan and the Armada for lunch, but from a stop light, they both will eat the lunch for an LR3. Have fun with the LR3 and be proud it is classy and not the "bling bling" of an Escalade, but make no mistake, it is a slug compared to other luxury SUVs.

Wayfarer,

Fair enough. In that case I've been fortunate not to go up against a titan or armada driver with an aggressive foot. I see that the next generation Range Rover (now pushed back to 2011/2012) might offer a 400hp+ V-12 as well as an all aluminum chassis which could shave as much as 1,000 lbs off it. Hmm.

Cheers!

I had an LR3 and traded it in for an RRS/SC. Of course the RRS feels much faster, I've seen it tested at 0-60 in 6.7. Not super quick but it feels it because of the immense torque. Reminds me of a milder version of my E55. The dynamic response is worth the price of admission. It really makes the RRS feel much more confident when turning. It is flat around the corner. One thing I didn't like about the LR3 was the handling wasn't that precise. But I will say the RRS is way way harsher riding and its louder because of it. The LR3 has an incredibly luxurious ride for such an off road capable SUV.

Of course the RRS is beaten by the LR3 in utility too. There just isn't that much room in the cargo and the head and leg room on the second row is tight. But to my eye, its just a nicer looking package and that's why I traded the LR3 in for one.

Buy both and you will not have to worry about the details of one vs. the other...

I guess this is why there are different vehicles for sale. I went up a hill in rock-crawl mode last week in my LR3 that I wouldn't even consider taking an Armada, Titan, Lexus, or Mercedes up. Then I came back down it in hill decent control and loved the feeling of control. I've never seen a speed limit I couldn't exceed. In sport mode it puts me back in the seat as hard as I want it to. If you want more acceleration than that and still want to occasionally see the world at 3 mph, you probably need to have to vehicles.

Two vehicles is the answer

Sold my 330i sport to buy the LR3 given family expansion, need to move stuff between manhattan and upstate NY

I looked at the RRS, felt too small, didn't like Q7 or GL (or FFRR for that matter). In my opinion LR3 is the best out there for what it's supposed to do (at least for me) - provide rugged, very flexible transport.

Do I wish it had more HP? Yes. Do I wish it had something like the Dynamic Response package? Yes. (LRNA if you are listening, some of us would surely pay for this!). At the end of the day, the LR3 "only" has 300hp and handles "only" so-so...

Solution - buying a 2003 540i sport as my second car, which is in my opinion one of the most beautiful sport sedans ever built.
