LR3 vs. Touareg

I'm pretty sure you can program suspension lowering to the key fob on the 2005, but there are some practical hurdles that limit casual usage.

For me it's easy to just knock down the switch as you slow to a stop - becomes a matter of habit.

Yep, you can. Good point - that is one of the cool things about the LR3 - the programmable key fob button. However, I still wish there was a setting in the info display that allowed you to set the suspension to automatically lower when the car was turned off.

Having both a Touareg and a LR3 I will try to help a bit.

Mechically there not much of a comparison, the touareg is a better built car and has a more sports car like/driver feedback oriented response when driving where the LR3 is a bit more numb and heavy feeling. The LR3 handles more like a "truck" due to its setup and live rear axle. In the power department the treg also has the upper hand especially the newer ones with the FSI V8.

4WD systems on both vehicles are outstanding and can't say one is better then the other. A treg with air suspension is very similar to that of the LR3 in features and ride height. LR3 has a few more offroad settings.

Both cars have great interiors. I would say the treg has a bit better build quality while I like the LR3's better for its style. Where the LR3 really jumps ahead is in interior space.

I like both cars very much and for different reasons. I guess the best way to put it is the treg in V8 or diesel is more of a drivers car and the LR3 is more of a car for the passenger.

I would say the LR3 is better distance crusier do to the space and high comfortable seating positions, but my treg is a V10 TDI diesel with over 550 lb/ft of torque and gets nearly 30mpg on the highway

Yep, no doubt. I just hope VW doesn't do away with it when they bring out the TDI V6. Damn California people - ruining all the good engine choices for everyone

BTW - you don't have to be in park to lower the suspension. I often do it pulling in to the driveway so it is fully lowered by the time we get in to the garage. This is another somewhat strange thing - the fact that you can't raise/lower the suspension with any door open. As best as I can figure, they do this to keep you from lowering an open door on to a raised object (curb, pile of snow, etc). Must be the same people who make us click "accept" each time on the Nav screen or use the 1791 hack to enter info while moving

When I visted both to look at some CPO's the VW dealer could have cared less I was there. All their "CPO" Touaregs were dirty inside and out..door dings..scratches, etc.
At the LR dealer it was the polar opposite. The CPO LR3's were spotless inside and out.
They have taken the time to answer all of my questions as if I was their most important customer they had. It makes a strong argument towards buying the LR3.

The LR3 has independent rear suspension. Not a solid or "live" axle.

I would agree Land Rover has a better dealership network. All dealerships will really vary. I have had both good and bad experiences with both Land Rover and VW...
