Mass air flow sensor failure / K&N link?

The landrover dealer in Charleston, SC said the oil from my K & N filter probably caused the mass air flow sensor on my 98' disco to go out. Any truth to this?

When you cleaned and reoiled the K&N, did you use an excess amount of oil, did you allow the filter to sit on some newspaper for an hour or so to soak up any excess oil??
Yes, too much excess oil will trach a mass sensor.

It came oiled, and I've only had it for about 3 months. It didn't seem too oily.

Since it was pre oiled and if you did not add any oil, it is doubtful that the K&N caused your problems.... you can always try and clean the old MAF before looking into getting another one... I would buy used, the price of a new MAF of a D1 is a little high.

I agree with Joey, try cleaning it, you would have to use a good electrical airisol cleaner from an electrical store. I have talked with some people who say it worked.
Might check on the Disco Web also for suggestions.

I used some non-residue electrical contact cleaner.... Removed it from the Disco. Sprayed it completly on the inside (used almost a whole small can) let set for about 30 minutes just to make sure that it dried, then reinstalled. Worked great.

I have a K&N havent had any problems yet, I do make sure not to over oil
but I,m thinking to clean MAF as preventative maintenence.
