Need some advice from a few Discovery owners

(Posted this in the wrong forum so hopefully I'll get a little more activity in this one.)

I'm thinking about purchasing a 2002 Land Rover Discovery SE7. The one I'm interested in is going for $8974 with 80,337 miles on it.
I'm not much of an off-roader; this'll be used as my main mode of transportation around town (I drive about an average of 25 miles a week, if that.) This car has basically been my dream car since I was like 10; I just love the look of a Land Rover and the secure feeling of driving an SUV.
My questions are: is this a decent price for this year? And what kind of maintenance and cost can I expect to keep the vehicle in good working order? (My husband is planning on taking care of any maintenance it needs.) Also, for what I need it for, is it a good idea to get this kind of car? I've been researching Discoveries and there are so many different opinions on them. Seems like people either love them or hate them. I don't mind having to do regular and timely maintenance on the car, because I do want to keep it in good running shape, but should I be expecting to be fixing or replacing something every month? Or even every week?
I guess reading all those conflicting opinions and experiences have made me a little nervous about the reliability of the Discovery, so any honest feedback would be really appreciated.

For the year I think it is priced about right with the mileage, I have seen 04 disco's go for that much but had over 100k on them... and I have seen really nice 02 go for what your speaking of....

Basically 90% of the people that you read about complaining about rover reliability are maybe 30% of the owners... how often do you read about people on any forum that has nothing but good things to say about a vehicle? So keep that in mind first. Second, as long as you change all the fluids when you buy it and keep up with the basic maintenance and watch the fluids (the antifreeze level is a priority to be checked at least weekly) you should be fine. 25 miles a week isn't bad. Sadly that is about all I average on mine anymore because I only drive it when it snows here in Cincinnati or to go off roading.

Remember to read all posts on here or other forums with the thought of you are only reading about peoples issues not about how long it has been driven without issues.

Just seen a 2000 or 2002 Disco (can't remember) that went through the auction and sold for $1700 (roughly) but it had 313k miles on it... all original and it still drove well. So keep that in mind.

$8500 is a little steep for an 02. $6500 or less would be prefered. I'd look for a nice 04 for $11K-$12K if you can swing it. Have an indy shop check it out. These trucks are prone to slipped liners, head gasket replacements and valve jobs so if one of these hasn't yet been completed it will need to be in the near future. Otherwise these are very reliable and durable trucks.
