Chew on this...

Filled up again this morning 266 miles on 20 gallons. So 13 MPG and it was almost all highway again. So needless to say I was not thrilled.

BUT WAIT!

So I decided that with premium gas at $2.25 I was going to fill her up with the cheapest I could find. Not like buying better gas is doing anything for me, right? So into Mobile to fill up with *gasp* 87 octane!!!!!!!

So on the way home (about 5 miles) the trip computer reads the HIGHEST mpg I've EVER seen on my HSE in town. It was at 15.5 when I parked the truck.

So explain that... Seriously, explain that. Please!

Where you filling up at the same gas station everytime? Could be bad gas, try switching to another brand. I peronally only use Exxon, Chevron, and Shell. Also I put in some injector cleaner every other fill up. I buy the ProCare Techron which is a diluted form of the Techron that cleans out your system. Its preventive for sure, but at $2 a bottle, cheap insurance.

Same company most times (Mobile) sometimes different locations.

Aren't Exxon and Mobile the same company?

Not uncommon to get better gas mileage with lower octane fuel. I get noticeably better mileage on my car and on the LR3 with lower octane fuel. Higher octane fuel burns faster...good for horsepower, bad for mileage.

The danger with low octane fuel is detonation (pinging) which can lead to piston damage. I run lower octane in my cars in the winter when cold oxygen rich air is available. In the summer or when towing...back to the high test stuff.
