hello everyone. first post! i have the chance to buy a 1997 discovery with a 160,000 miles in pretty nice shape, runs good, but only in reverse. will not move in forward gear. for 500 dollars is this a good deal? i was told buy a guy that this was common for discoverys. that the transmisions are weak. is this true? is that whats wrong with it, the transmision? any helpful input or knowledge would be great. thankyou!

Welcome all I can say is RUN don't walk.

The guy is full of SH*T... weak Transmissions, no this is not the Freelander we are talking about.

Sorry, but I would hate to see you get screwed. You may pay $500 for the Disco, but if you are lucky you might find a used Transmission or get this one rebuilt for $2500 making your rover cost you $3000 and you don't even know if everything else works.

I will say if you were thinking of parting it out $500 is a great deal and you could make some money selling the parts.
