In my first year of ownership my NAV would once in a while dispaly a dialogue box that read "Temperature Error - Shutting Down" and then proceed to power off. If I was running the heat, I'd shut it off and eventually when the area around the head unit cooled down, the unit would power back up like nothing happened.

Back when it first happened Land Rover hadn't seen much of this. They didn't know what the issue was. It basically went unresolved. It still does this once in a while....like maybe once a year.

I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced this, now that the LR3 has been in service for over 4 years.

Sounds like part of the "charm" of LR ownership to me ;)

I also have a 2005, but no history of an overheating Navi unit. Is it the Navi itself cycling down, or the dvd drive or just the display screen?

There is a TSB for this, LA415-005.

Situation: A customer may report a concern that a message 'temperature shutdown', 'CD over temperature' or 'system over temperature' is displayed by the infotainment system and that the unit no longer functions.
If a high heating system temperature is selected in combination with a low fan speed, the temperature build up in the central area behind the center dash can lead to the infotainment system shutting itself down to protect the electrical circuits. This is a feature for the protection of the system.
Action: New heating system control software has been developed to redistribute the airflow at these settings to avoid this problem. Should a customer express concern regarding the above, refer to the Service Procedure detailed in this bulletin to update the control software to the latest configuration.

Thanks Chris, I will inform my service advisor of this...or maybe I will turn up the fan speed!
