Hi,

I got to work this morning and there was steam coming from the hood.
The temp gage never told me it was hot. I did smell radiator something. I
looked under the vehicle and there was a dripping toward the driver
side front. I am about to have a garage come look at it. Any ideas? I am
90 miles from my house and by myself. It has 103000 miles on it. The
water pump was replaced at 50000 by the dealer. It had a crack in it.

Help!

Did you see exactly where the steam was coming from? It could be a burst radiator hose. Personally, I have never trusted the water temperature gauge, and fitted onto the expansion tank, a low water level sensor from an early model Range Rover, wired to a 'piezo' buzzer which I located under the dash. Now, if the water level drops a inch or so, the piezo is activated. Sure beats a potential blown motor.

Check to make sure the expansion tank hasn't burst... common on the black tanks.

thanks for replying! The steam was coming out of the driver's side of the vehicle. The garage just picked it up. I had no fluid. Surprise, surprise. He told me the dripping underneath the vehicle was not supposed to be there. That it could be a hose. My husband is deployed so I definitely appreciate ANY help I can get. I know this sounds totally dumb, but shouldn't the temp gage have risen when I drove in? I had no warning lights or anything.

Yes the gauge should have gone up, but unfortunatly it does not always read or show the correct temp. I would recommend a good external temp guage.... but then again... I need to do this to soon.

Overheating followup

The mechanic said they can't get it to overheat now. So we shall see. Does fluid get used up or evaporated when it is hot? I know this sounds dumb. He also said my hoses are getting worn. What kind should I buy? I DO NOT go to the dealer unless I have to. Thanks again

My Disco overheating problems were similar until I added water wetter to a much diluted coolant. I would imagine that the engine got hot enough to blow by a loose clamp or something.

I wouldn't run the A/C till you get to the bottom of the problem.

Good luck

I prefer Makers Mark :)

If you had to add water wetter, it may be time to have your radiator rodded out or replaced.
