...I was having a little fun over the weekend on a fairly easy trail. Some loose rocks and larger boulders. It was dry but not dusty and there were several water crossings that we'd gone through.

After climbing a fairly long hill with a lot of loose rocks I came to a stop and applied the Parking Brake. The LR3 started making a horrific shrill sound (from the rear) and then let me know that I had a Parking Brake Fault. It displayed both the amber and red icons and the Info Center said either "Parking Brake Fault" or "Parking Brake System Fault."

I re-booted. The results the rest of the day were intermittent. Meaning...When I started the rig up it seemed fine, but when I stopped and applied the brake the whole scenario repeated itself. Later on the way out of there I got a "Reduced Engine Performance" message...although it seemed to be functioning just fine to me.

Finally, after driving at highway speeds I stopped at a power wash station to clean everything. When I parked in the stall I applied the Park Brake and it seemed fine. I turned off the rig. I then thought I should put it in Off-road Height so that I could clean the underside more easily. I started the LR3, raised it up and it started "singing" again and another Park Brake Fault occured. I'm not sure if it had anything to do with the suspension height or if that was a coincidence.

I cleaned the car, paying special attention to the rear wheels and making sure to blow out any dirt or small rocks that may've gotten lodged in there.

....I haven't had an issue since.

Any ideas on what may've happened?

Houm, just had my truck in for the same problem. It was the parking brake actuator,
it needed to be recalibrated was all. At first it only happened once in a while, but then
started happening more frequently so I had them look at it my next service date.
Hope this helps. DD

Duck...was it making the same shrill loud sound, too?

It has stopped doing it; do you think I should worry about it?

Thanks a lot for your response.

Worry no.
Yes to loud, nasty grinding noise after applying the brake with faults and all.
After re-boot it would go away for a few applications then would pop up at
the worst times like rolling up to a valet w/ wife. Everyone would turn thier head and
wonder what kind of piece of s#!t is that guy driving. Mine was covered under
warranty so I'm couldn't tell you what kind of cost would be involved otherwise.
But I drove mine (2 months) like that until I couldn't take it any more and had to
take it in.

Okay; thanks. I have an extended warranty so at least I know how much it will cost!!! ($100 deductible).

...so you're saying it would do it periodically for 2 months? How often in that time? I have used it about 30 times since Saturday and it has not recurred.

At first it happened maybe every 20th application. By the end of April it was about
every 5th time. If yours only acts up once a month then it might be something
that can wait until your next service. But I would definately have them look at it then.

"Sorry maam, we have to calibrate your parking brake," sounds like one of those lines an untrustworthy mechanic throws at a naive customer. Damn, we have a high maintenance vehicle! LOL

Prolly a dumb question, but why are people with automatic transmissions using parking brakes? I mean, isn't the vehicle physically incapable of moving with the transmission in park and either the park pin or ball (how ever LR does it) engaged?

Just wondering...

I use mine a lot when off road. Also when I have to park on an incline.
