Great video. The shape of the contact patch changes not the overall amount. Same discovery I made with dirt bike tires. A narrower tire creates a longer and narrower contact patch. For floatation (sand) wider may be better. Oh yeah and looks lol.

I've seen advantages and disadvantages to each; wide versus narrow tires. I currently am running 275/70R18 Cooper MT's on mine.

Good stuff here. I've been on E rated 265/65/18 Ridge Grapplers, and I see they have the 255/70s in LT. I may give those a try and maybe not so surprisingly, the 255s are 10lbs lighter per tire!

Hi BigBriDogGuy,

Interesting video on the subject that I watched:

Jeff

This guy's channel is Toyota-centric, but it's the best channel I've ever seen to go in-depth on what modifications really do versus the myth.

His videos on lifting independent suspension vehicles and "long travel" control arms are outstanding.

I agree, but I'm not convinced that his findings are generalizable. For what he's testing, though, they're very good tests.

Do your rear tires currently rub in the rear wheel wells, at the front and/or top of the rear wheel wells? This would only occur on full stuff or if you air down all the way to your bump stops. Or do your front tires rub the frame horns behind the front tires? I'm guessing your answer to each is "no" with 265/65/18s. Keep in mind that the extra half-inch or so of tire height may cause a little rubbing. 32" seems to be the upper limit with these wheel wells.

I keep meaning to put it on the stops but haven’t done that. For the first few thousand miles I did rub the horns at full lock. My layperson assumption was the narrower profile would alleviate that issue even though the circumference is a touch bigger.

It looks to me like the 255 is an "XL" rated tire rather than LT, no ? I'm no expert, but I thought XL was more of a heavy-duty passenger car tire rating that a C/D/E rated LT tires. May not have the same sidewall thickness if you're going offroad, etc.

They might not have the same sidewall thickness, which might let them flex more when aired down. Just need to make sure they are rated for the load.
