Sounds to me like a computer issue.. This will probably require it to be taken to the dealer...

Just to check... disconnect the battery for about an hour and see if the issue goes away. Remember disconnecting the battery will require you to reenter the radio code.

Easy, call the local dealer with the vin number and they should be able to provide the radio code, or it may be written in the owners manual if you have one. Normally a 5 digit code.

P38 Tranny will only shift manually

Just thought I would respond to an older post regarding my experience with a 1999 Range Rover 4.6 HSE only shifting manually. This started when I had the chain in the transfer case replaced which was slipping, rebuilding the tranfer case at a local transmission shop and not the Dealer. However, I did have the vehicle towed to the dealer and they said I needed a new trans. Towed it back to a different transmission shop and they did a transmission swap since they opted not to try to rebuild the extremely complex transmission. The vehicle has been shifting perfectly and automatically ever since. I since have sold the vehicle to a buddy who makes alot more money than I do. Since I may not be doing too much posting, I will add to the story. I bought the Rover from another buddy that paid $15,000. in 2006. He owned it for several months and only drove it 3000 miles but did spend about $5000. on an air bag suspension conversion to coils and shocks, and the replacement of a leaking heated core. I paid $8000. had it for about a year spent another $3000. on trans, tranfe rcase and headliner replacement. Check eng. light was on so I replaced the MAF. The light did not go out so maybe the idle air control valve needs to be replaced. I also replaced the wires and plugs and installed a K&N air filter but could never get better than 13 MPG AVG in the city. Sold it for $7500. most were going for about $5000. on ebay. I do miss it some what but not too too much. I still have the original tranny and am considering rebuilding it to offet it for sale. Incidentally, this one has the Bosch engine, not the GEMS.
