Here is a picture of the pan in place with the bolt sequence on the painters tape...

The next step is the refill procedure, for this I followed the ZF procedure (which I condensed in to a document I can share if needed). In essence:

Fill with ZF Lifeguard 6 fluid until it comes out the fill hole; initially this was about 1.5L (which I knew was not enough) so I installed the fill hole plug and waited about half an hour. I then added about another 1.5L (good).

Next, start the engine and see how much more fluid can be added (quite a lot if I recall correctly), close filling plug and stop the engine. I don't recall how much I added.

Start the engine again, put the vehicle in snow mode, with the brakes on and handbrake engaged I selected Reverse (hold for about three seconds); then drive (hold for 3s); then I put it in sport mode and selected 1st and 2nd again holding for a few seconds. I opted not to have the wheel spinning so didn't get to gears 3 through 4 (risk reward wasn't there for me). I then went back through D then R then park.

With the engine still running and my gap tool connected I waited until the transmission got to 32C and opened the filling plug again; I had to add a little more transmission fluid until it started running out the fill hole. Now, let the transmission oil warm up to about 40C and wait for the transmission oil drip to slow down. I had to wait until about 43C for the drip to slow down at which time I re-installed the fill plug. I had some gloves handy to avoid burning myself on the cat. I reckon this took me about 45 minutes overall. The fill plug gets torqued to 35Nm.

I used approximately 6.1 L and plan to double check the fluid level in a few days.

I took her out for a drive; things seem similar, perhaps a little quieter and cleaner shifts but it's still holding gears longer than I would like. I will see if this adapts over time... Now on to the next issue (and a new post :-( )

Good call on the tape. For us novices it really helps to write stuff down. When I was doing the valve covers on my project I wrote on the valve cover in sharpie.

GReat write up. Nice to have in one place vs when I did it using 5 different sources.
It's weird that you have the opposite problem I have with the 6 speed, but I think by design, it shifts too soon for my taste.
Does changing the winter/sand/ruts mode change how your transmission acts? By design, winter shifts sooner and sand shifts later.

As I responded earlier, I just use S on the selector. There is no need to select the dynamic terrain response system.

I was asking OP if the terrain response selection influenced his late shifting pattern at all or if his issue only happens in normal mode.

Honestly not sure and per my other thread she's off the road at the moment! I can report back once things are fixed again. One thing I notice; when I pull out of my drive and go left I go down a hill, I notice that it will sit at about 1900rpm holding a gear almost as if it's engine braking for me. I personally would rather wear my brakes than my engine... I know in previous cars I've done a transmission reset, had it learn my driving style and been much happier as a result. I typically like it to keep the engine revs down unless I want to hammer it ... I know we're all different and that's great.

When I go downhill it will also hold a gear and keep me from going too fast, so my LR4's transmission behavior aligns with yours. I like it, and don't expect a detectable increase in wear from this, and 2k rpm isn't really high in my book.

I'm nodding my head, this is good to hear despite my OCD approach/opinions, I can live with this. - Thank you.
