Rear Crossover Pipe leak confirmation Pictures

I recently replaced the main radiator that had a slight leak when I pressure tested the cooling system. I also replaced all the hoses, and the overflow container. However, I still had a slight smell of coolant after driving but no visible leaks.

I used my borescope camera to examine around the engine and discovered what I think are leaks in the rear crossover pipe that is the old, seamed style and I think original to the truck.

Just wanted to confirm that this is the pipe and it is leaking?

It’s a little hard to tell given the angles, but yes, that looks like what I remember the rear crossover pipe looking like. And regardless, you clearly have a leak back there that needs some attention.

Thanks. I was hoping the radiator leak was the only one. I will have to remove the supercharger for this repair. My plan is to change the spark plugs and injectors while I have it all opened up.

Ah ha! I thought it was strange the coolant was green. I replaced the main radiator and most of the engine cooling hoses as well as the power steering cooling hoses. I flushed the coolant out and put in new coolant from Land Rover, that is orange.

This pipe I assume is to cool the supercharger intercooler? Is there a separate coolant system for this?

If not too late...there is an upgrade option to aluminum instead of this plastic. You should consider it while in there. The front and rear pipes are notorious for failing as well as the oil cooler/water pump connector. Land Rover engineers did a lot of things right but slept through class on the cooling system design.

For my rig the pipe ties two coolant channels together, one on each side of the V of the block and then other engine parts connect to it for coolant.

I’ve read about the aluminum pipes, some good some not so good. Land River did modify the pipes and removed the seams. My front pipes are the seamless ones. I think I’ll replace them with the new design. Given the tight space to work I want it to fit perfectly without fighting with it.

My 1987 Defender was not well designed. In fact the diesel engine was put together in a dark garage using parts from the dark ages. They stuck a turbo charger on an engine without considering the increased pressures. The engine leaked oil that couldn't be resolved. I replaced the engine with a 200 TDI that was designed to handle a turbo. But at least that vehicle was simple to repair.

The LR4 is great looking. I haven’t found anything to warrant praise in its mechanical or electrical/electronic design. It’s certainly not designed for maintainability. I do like it though. It’s a vehicle that keeps on giving, problems. I would never spend money to have it repaired. I do enjoy fixing it.

I agree. Even the dealer that sold me the LR4 told me after we spoke a few times and concurred that these vehicles were addictive, that I was showing the signs of a true Land Rover owner.

If it isn’t broken, there’s something wrong and you need a “fix”.
