My rear diff started making noise 2 days after purchase of a LR3 with 77k miles on it. I changed the fluid and the fluid was black and smelled burnt. I dropped it off at the LR dealer I purchased from and they said the input bearing is making the noise. They are replacing the whole diff. I did not get the extended warranty and am now second guessing that decision.

The dealership said it will take 7-10 days to get the part and are giving me the vehicle back to drive until it comes in. Is the diff ok to drive on? What is the worst case that could happen in 10 days of driving?

According to my LR dealer ( i have the same issue) the damage is already done. More driving is not going to change what they have to replace even if the diff locks up. So drive on! Hopefully you purchased an extended warranty.
