replacing front rotars I NEED HELP!!!!!!!!!!!

I need to replace the front rotars and the driver side caliper on my 98 discovery and this involves alot more than I expected. I was wondering if anybody has step by step instructions on how to do this and the guidelines on how tight everything needs to be tightned up. I can't believe that changing the rotars would be this difficult. Please help!!!!!! I drained my wallet buying the parts and can't afford to take it somewhere but have to get it running so I can get to work. If not, I am really screwed.

and if you need step by step instructions you SHOULD NOT be doing your own brakes!

First things first, download the repair manual http://www.landroverresource.com/

I hope you have the hub nut tool (it is one of the cheapest Rover tools you can buy)

then make sure while you are in there that you clean and grease the bearings. I hope this helps.

No bad day at all but there are simple truths about cars.
1) If you have never done brakes then you probably should not try without supervision. Being that it is the single most important safety system in the car. It is also not as simple as it seems.

2) Don't buy cars that you cannot afford to maintain. Particularly if its your main mode of transportation. This is not meant in any kind of snobby way, its just a fact if you cannot afford to have things fixed and don't have the appropriate experience to repair yourself then you shouldn't but it.

Not meant to be rude but sometimes people need to realign the way they are thinking, and messing around with you brakes (and your not just doing the rotors your replacing a caliper which requires bleeding the system.) something done incorrectly can actually **** you!

If I were to guess, I would say the original poster knows how to work on brakes, he has just never had to tear a hub down to change a rotor or caliper... messed with my day the first time I pulled my Disco's front wheel. I will say it is the easiest brake pad change I have ever done though.

I don't have the tool but pretty sure that I can get it from the dealership. I have worked on brakes before and replaced calipers and pads just like I am doing this time. I have also bled systems before. Just never had to pull off the hub to get to the rotar. I wasn't expecting it to be that in depth. Just figured that it would be a top hat rotar thinking that land rover would make it easy to fix on the trail if something went wrong in the middle of nowhere. Which is where I am most of the time. I ride dirt roads most of the time and bought a rover for that very purpose not the luxury part. Thanks for all the help, and I was able to find a repair manual on line. I just had to buy an electric fan that sits behind the radiator and thats why the wallet is drained. That's about 800 in parts in one weekend. Ouch!!!!! Got lucky and found the parts around town. So hopefully nothing else goes wrong due to the punishment I put it through.

Hey chrisclark77 I had the same problem this pass summer. Not hard but demanding. Takes time. roverparts.com have the tool you need about $20.00. I'm Done

I got it done today. It took me about six hours to do it. I wanted to make sure that everything went back in right and just went and bought a huge suge socket set to get those lock nuts off. They start at two inch's and go all the was to 3 inch's. I packed the bearings with grease, bled the brakes, and drove it home. Everything went great on the way home. Thanks for all the help. Couldn't have done it without you guys.
