Would you be able to post any photos of your expedition rack? What do you think of it? Thanks.

Here it is after I put my Yakima on it. I can tell you that I would not pay the retail price again after getting my hands on it. The thing is maybe worth the discounted price that one of the internet sales places is selling it at, $866 I think. Not that sturdy. Nothing like the welded tube racks. The Yakima actually stiffened it up somewhat.

Thanks for the photos. I think the rack looks very nice. It gives the vehicle even more of the "ready for anything" look. And the Yakima crossbars match the appearance. Let us know how the wind noise is after you get more at the wheel.

I have a question, do you experience a "whistling" noise coming from the roof?
I opted for the crossbars and experience an annoying "whistling" noise at speeds over 40 MPH.
I've moved them around to no avail.

I have the OEM crossbars as well. Yes, they do whistle a bit. Not nearly as bad as a Thule or Yakima system might, and my guess is far less than the Expedition Rack. I think it is a little more noticeable due to all the glass on the roof...not much in the way of soundproofing.

My experience with racks is that they all whistle to some extent. If you can properly fit a fairing to the front crossbar, most if not all the wind noise can be eliminated. Other than that, it's the price you pay for the benefits of the rack.

I took my first extended highway trip in the vehicle yesterday with speeds up to 75 mph. The expedition rack does not cause a whistling noise. There is a slight dull roar as the air hits the front wind deflector however. I expected this much and it was not bad. I wanted to mention also that when in town and driving no more than 20 - 50 mph that opening the sunroof creates an enormous amount of noise. A great deal of turbulence up there. Pretty much makes the sunroof useless unless your off roading at a pace that turbulence is not an issue.

Thanks for the info. My SE7 has dual sunroof and crossbars and i never experimented that whistleling sound. It's much louder when the sunroof is open, but still audible when closed. The dealership said that there is currently no fix other than to remove them when not in use or until they can come up with a fix, so for now they are ornaments in the garage.

Rooftent

Has anyone considered putting a rooftent on their LR3? Here's an Italian company with a number of options. They're imported in the US and apparently many other countries. http://www.zifer.it/file_gb/overland.html

I wonder if you can buy the mounting hardware for the expedition roof rack separately. It could increase options for mounting some of these tents.

Hi there,

I was considering the Howling Moon roof top tent. This is a South African company. Not sure if they are available in the USA.

This tent attaches to 2 crossbars using the 2 aluminium extrusions (supplied) and it would sit above the rear section of the LR3 roof and the tent would fold out over the rear of the LR3 or to the side (depending on your preference). I haven't researched into the load ratings of the LR3 roof bar attachment points however the Howling Moon roof top tent (Tourer version) weighs 60Kg.

You can find the installation instructions in pdf on the website shown below.

No need for the expedition rook rack which I think would interfere with the mounting of this tent.
