Seems to be common. . .LR "scored" my pads supposedly to fix the squeak problem, but it did nothing. I guess the only real problem is that people walking down the street just kind of giggle at the guy with a $50,000 LR3 that squeaks like a 1984 Chevy Jimmy.

Hmmm...I've only noticed squeaking on mine at very low speeds (like manuevering in a parking garge).

Heavy braking at speed does not make a noise, but at very low speeds or when stopping at a light or sign, the noise is fairly noticeable. The same thing happened on a 06' loaner I got from LR.

I have 24,000 on my '05 and the squeal has approached embarassment on my brakes. LR looked at it and I have 2mm left on front pads and 3mm left on rear, but the reason given for the Loud squeal on light braking is "cupped rotors", so according to LR I will need 4 new rotors and 4 new pads in 2-3,000 miles at a cost of $900-$1000. I guess you have to ante up with such a heavy vehicle on those brakes. Has anyone had brakes and rotors replaced at an aftermarket shop, not a dealer? Scares me to death, as I have not had good luck with "brakes plus" in the past on other vehicles.

...is that considered normal "wear 'n tear?" I wouldn't think so. They should cover that. Question for you snwbrdn....how often do you drive in CommandShift?

Well, this is difficult for me to answer because, I bought the vehicle used with 18,000 miles. I haven't yet driven in command shift in my CO Rockies because THOSE DAMN WRAGLER HP'S BITE and I'm waiting patiently for the MTR's, heck I might even see steel belts soon if Goodyear doesn't hurry up. But I digress. Anyway, I shall bring up the "Normal wear 'n tear" phrase with my dealer and see if they bite. Heck they replaced my torn leather seat N/C. I'm skeptical though. My wife's old Volvo had to have her pads and rotors replaced at 27,000, so I'm not sure this is truly a LR only issue. I did see in one of the Car mags recently where they put the LR3 up against the Escalade and the new Mercedes GX and the brakes on the LR3 stopped the 3 ton beast way before the other two so I guess kudos goes to the braking system in performance. Performace may also mean more frequent replacement.

Rotors replaced at 24K? That sounds a bit fishy. I could understand the brake pads needing replacement, but the rotors? The only reason I ask is that mine squeak badly (I deafened a guy at the drive thru last night), and I only have 15K on mine.

snwbrdn, what do the tires have to do with command shift? I think you may've misread my post and thought I meant "terrain response." Commandshift is just the manual shifting function of the transmission. I only ask because my feeling is that if the vehicle is used in commandshift more and hence used more engine braking, the brake pads would probably last longer. ...so I was trying to get a feel for what your driving style is like.

I agree with jptruck that 24k should not equate to rotors being replaced. Hell I had a Montero for 208k miles and NEVER replaced the rotors. ...and at 24k miles on the LR3, my brakes seem as good as new....except for the low speed squeaking which is occasional and probably can be attributed to dust.

Sorry, Horum, you are right I did misread your question, and yes, I do like to put the car in command shift for quick launches and passing, but not as a general rule do I leave it in command shift or do manual shifting unless I am driving in the mountains. (Hilly Highways, etc.) I'm sure engine braking takes the heat off the brakes, but in my mind, that doesn't explain early rotor wear. I guess I will have to have them physically show me the "cupped rotors" and explain that to me. Anyway, I guess like jptruck stated earlier in this thread, I'd rather not have brakes that sound like an '84 Chevy Jimmy either.

Well, just had $1063 worth of 4 rotors and new brake pads at 25,700 miles. Finally, my brakes don't sqeak like an '84 GMC Jimmy, but all of a sudden my American Express Card squeaks everytime I remove it from my wallet. (Must be part of the LR experience which wasn't explained to me at delivery)
