stuck in reverse

im interested in buying a 2000 LR DISC from a private owner. the LR was driven into a ditch and as the person was trying to get out the LR got stuck in reverse.
the question: could that be the transmission or the transfer box

Probably the linkage got stuck or bent going to the transmission.
