Ticking sound - not a bomb

While in gear or neutral but not park my trans makes a ticking sound sort of like a big end bearing or valve tap all though it doesn't seem to increase frequency in direct relation to the rpms plus it's louder when hot.

It did it before I replaced the trans screen and gasket and fluids as well.

check the transfer case gear oil level... might be low
