I've been hunting down an issue in the driveline for several years now. This is an 05' HSE with 125k mi. I think I've found the source.

Symptoms: The problem is often experienced under acceleration, uphill, steering wheel between 10-12, in second or third gear. You will hear a single thud of driveline backlash or several sequential thuds that go away when shifted into the next higher gear (regardless of what gear) or when the steering column is moved clockwise.

Recently, I've been experiencing it when shifting from reverse to drive and vice versa.

Stuck a camera under the old boy and found this play at the Transfer Case/Rear Driveshaft.

Check out the video:

Items of Note:

- When I bought it at 90k Mi, none of the driveline oils had been changed.

- The transfer case clicked in reverse uphill.

- This noise went away when the oils were changed at 91k.

- Rear locker is a little grumbly but no major shavings and no metal in the pumpkin.

- Transmission oil changed at 115k and conversion to metal pan. Normal wear on magnets. Nothing shocking.

Conclusion:

I'm concerned the chain may be jumping. Or, that the transmission output maybe worn.

Would heartily appreciate any info that may point my indie in the right direction.

And, yes, DiscoMike, I've read your posts and know that the sky is falling and it'll cost me and arm and a leg and my first born.

hmmm. thinking about this. Bear in mind, the drive shaft wouldn't rotate if there wasn't some slack in the diff. Do the video again on the flange of the diff just for kicks.
