I just changed the transmission fluid in my 99 Disco for the second time in two months. I did this because the ATF was black when I bought it. On the first change I drained and filled with 5 quarts and that topped it off just right. Today I did the same thing but this time the dip stick shows it being significiantly overfilled. My questions is: Why would the dipstick show there being more fluid this time? Also, Any tips on draining and not over draining the excess fluid? I heard excess fluid can cause a fire, is this true?

Thanks,

Mark

Overfill can cause foaming due to rotating parts whipping up the oil which then becomes compressable vs solid, a bad thing that can cause extra heat and clutch wear. Did to check when hot at normal operating temperatures both times?
The more I drive the better I like the 95 D1 5-speed.

I heard that the exra fluid is ejected from the Transmission only when the vehicle is being driven. Which leaves to chance that the fluid will come into contact with hot exhaust pipes and can create fire. Ever heard that one?

where do you put in the transmission fluid after you drain it? I don't know how to fill up the trans. fluid. I have an automatic disco 1.

I pour mine in the tube where the trans dip stick is located. Seems to take aprox. 5 quarts to refill. Thats if you only drain the old fluid, not flush the whole thing.

I'm assuming this is about auto gearboxes, by the amounts of oil mentioned. So, excuse me if I'm wrong. The factory handbook says, for the Mk1 auto Disco: Ambient temperature should be 68F or 20C. Vehicle on the level. Gearbox cold. Start the engine. With both brakes applied, go from P to D1 and back to P. With the engine still running, check the gearbox dipstick levels. From the low mark to the full mark is 0.25 litre top-up.
I did this, and checked the next day with the engine off, and gearbox cold, and the fluid was one and a half inches above the dipstick full mark. Did the procedure as above, and it was spot on the full mark. The levels are very temperature dependent, and can't be done accurately if the box is warm.
I hope you got a few hundred quid off for an auto-box with black oil in it. A sign of severe mis-use, or even the wrong oil! Just because the manual box uses the same oil as the auto, some idiot garage hands think that means EP90 will do in either. My (95) Disco Mk1 auto has done 125k, the oil is still almost invisible pink, after topping up at 60k, and changes up and down as per the handbook.
The box holds almost 10litres, (17+ pints) but you can't get it all out, as some stays in the torque converter.
I thought the later Disco's auto-box was sealed for life, with no dipstick.
Don't see how excess oil can get "out" unless a seal gets blown-then you really are in the s***t, the normal pressures inside are high, anyway,so there won't be an overflow hole!

Hope this clarifies the levels queries.

The D2's are not sealed for life, they just don't have a dipstick to check the fluid level... you have a drain and a fill plug... Not fun

I changed this fluid today on my 00 DII, An extra set of hands makes the job better on refill. I do not have the dipstick tube but I managed to fill it with the 5 quarts also.
Does anyone know if its possible to add a dipstick tube to the DII?
Will the DI tube work?

I Would think it would be possible, if the hole for the tube is available on the D2 transmission, as far as I know they are basically the same except for the tube... Transmission and engine arrangement that is.

I bought my 99 disco auto with 93k miles on it. I think it probably had the original trans fluid in it because of its dark color. I changed it out twice about 30 days apart to try to clear out any old fluid. It has a hard shift into drive sometimes but everything seems to be running strong (Knock on wood).
