Thanks Mike! Great info. Assumed it was worn torque converter clutch or bad Valve Body. Hoping for the latter (as I can fix that). I think I’ve decided to bite the bullet and get the 30k mile tranny installed.

I’m going to try some Lucas trans fix as a temporary fix. Recognize I may grenade it, but $10 and I’ll still end at the same outcome- new (to me) transmission.

You putting the new transmission in yourself, or having it done?

I’ll have it done. I’m brave, but not that brave

That $3,500 seems like a good deal for an installed transmission. Is it a Rover shop, or just a general mechanic?

It’s someone who specializes in zf transmissions. Not rover shop but he works on them

Yes, rennlist. I have a Porsche sports car and considered a cayenne before getting the land Rover so poked around a bit in the cayenne forums. Look in the cayenne 955 forum, I think there's a sticky near the top that summarizes common issues. Iirc valve bodies are a common problem on 2004 Cayennes.

So, took it in for formal diagnosis. After all that, he swears up and down it needs a software update. He is who my lr Indy uses for trans work.

According to my gap tool, trans software is current. I did a reflash already. Would my independent Lr shop have a different software patch? I’m feeling like this seems suspect, but he said that everything seems okay and that pressures are just wrong but consistent (so he doesn’t feel like any leaks).

What say you? It’s $340 for my independent to do the flash (especially if I can do it myself for free). Hate to throw $340 at it and it not work, then again I was prepared to spend 3-4K.

If it works, I’d gladly spend the $340.

If it's the same indy shop that will do the transmission swap, I'd see if he would credit the $340 towards the transmission swap if the reflash doesn't work.

But I don't see how he'd have any voodoo program that no one else has.

Unfortunately it’s not the same shop...

I’m going to try the gap tool again and see if it fixes. I’ve read to reset adaptations and then re-flash (in the gap manual) which I did not do the first time. Anyone else who’s done it or has insights?
